During the first half of 20 century the scientists made a conclusion that huge reserves of nepheline and apatite ores are deposited in the south-west of the Khibiny mountains. «Apatite arc» extended for a distance of 12 kilometers from Kukisvumchorr to Rasvumchorr plateau. In 1960-е apatite and nepheline ore mining enterprise increased its capacity that it required more areas than small Kirovsk could suggest.
The enterprise developed, new mining workers were in demand. The new community was established for them New town, at 20 kilometers distance from Kirovsk. In 1966 the town was given a new name - Apatity in honor of namesake railway station located nearby the settlement. Since 1963 ANOF-II, one more concentration plant was operating in New town. This plant processed up to 50 million ton of ore per year.
Kirovsk state regional power station was built to meet the needs of the mining enterprise. Electric power generated by the Kirovsk station was enough to cover needs of the community and industry. In 10 years demand for electric power increased. Powerful Kolskaya nuclear station was built in the south of Apatity town that provides a large amount of power for the whole Polar region. Power engineers and their families have founded the new settlement - Polyarnye Zori.
1970s became the period of nepheline industry's prosperity. The scientists managed to recover ultralight-weight gas - helium. Besides, rubidium was also extracted from ore. Sodium bicarbonate and potash were also produced. Mixture of nitrogen-potash fertilizers was developed for agricultural purposes. Sorbents and coagulants production started used to clear the water from contamination, fine-disperse silicone gel production. The production has increased that «Apatit» enterprise was recognized as the largest nepheline deposit of man-made type. Huge waste dumps have more than 500 million tons of crushed nepheline ore. Thanks to these reserves our country will be provided with material for processing for more than a hundred years.
During the last years the new apatite-nepheline deposit was discovered in the Khibiny mountains. This is a foothill of Koashva mountain. Several places were explored later: Kunijok river coast, Poachvumchorr mountain and Kuel'por-Suoluvaiv. Mining production of other minerals is developed. Large reserves are expected in Efeslogchorr region. Metal production is planned in the Khibiny: aluminum, titanium, iron, alkaline minerals. The territories will be developed with rich deposits of vanadium, strontium, fluorine and earth silicon.
The Khibiny meets the needs for fertilizers not only in Russia but other countries as well. Moreover, scientists discovered deposits of more than 350 types of minerals. Among them there are valuable minerals, for example, astrophyllite and scarlet eudialyte that became a real source of pride for the Khibiny mountains.
