Unfortunately, many minor commercial minerals and elements mined in the Khibiny still didn't find fields of application. These losses are compensated due to development of other deposits that can be preserved for future. Besides economical losses due to non-comprehensive development, it does harm to nature of Khibiny as processing wastes occupy large areas, pollute the air and water basins. The only large deposit in Russia of amazing mica - vermiculite and phlogopite, essential for many fields of industry and agriculture, is located in the surroundings of Kovdor town.
They are used for production of thermal and sound-insulating materials for construction, drilling mud for hole drilling, special soils for greenhouses. In Yensky mica-bearing area there are several deposits of muscovite - punch mica used in radio-engineering industry. However, implementation of the new materials and technologies provoked low interest to expensive punch mica and increasing demand of small-size and ground mica.
Kovdorslyda combined enterprise is developing deposit of ceramic pegmatite consisting of quartz and feldspar - raw materials for porcelain and pottery. Moreover, pegmatite plant wastes (crushed rock and sand) can be used for construction.
420-kilometer embowed band in the central part of the peninsula along the Keiv mountain ridge consists of unusual rocks - kyanite schist containing a large amount of aluminum. As a result of kyanite enrichment, silumin is produced, substance composed of aluminum and silica, fire-proof materials for metallurgy. Kyanite deposit development requires large expenses for construction of roads, mines, plant, therefore, at present these deposits are considered reserved ones.
Large-scale housing development and industrial construction creates increasing demand in local construction material: stone, gravel, sand and clay. Territory of Murmansk region is of crystalline rocks and overlaying moraine, that's why it can be said for sure it is fully supplied. Deposits of gneiss, granite, gabbro, diabases and quartzite for building cladding, flagstone and monuments. In some iron ore, apatite, copper-nickel open-pit mines, wall and overlaying rocks at individual crushed stone plants are used to produce concrete aggregate and road construction ballast. Demand of crushed rock both in the region and outside it is continuously increasing. Among moraine deposits there are lenses of boulders, gravel and sand, so called sand-gravel mixtures.
Gem stones and ornamental stones such as amazonite, violet amethyst, golden mica - astrophyllite, bright red eudialite, brown and purple garnet - almandine, yellow and brown sphen, many other minerals as a crystals, druse-brush, radial aggregates - suns and just ordinary inclusions found in our region can be beautiful jewelry, works, museum and academic exhibits. Unfortunately, this type of mining is not developed although semiprecious materials are of great interest in the world.
At last, underground waters can be referred to natural resources as well. First of all, water is a mineral, secondly, it is used for drinking and processing purposes. Due to contamination of the open water entities by communal and industrial wastes, need for water supply using underground water is sharply increasing. Hydrologists has discovered and explored the deposit of mineral water near Monchegorsk. Artesian springs of thermal water having temperature 35-40° С were found at deep horizons of the Khibiny massif at 1.5-2.5 kilometers from the surface during drilling works. Water is heated due to thermal energy of earth depths.
The Khibiny are amazing thanks to its mineral treasures, many of them are still the mystery to human being.
